A Conference Cataloged
Updated: Mar 9, 2022
Every year the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) hosts an annual international conference called ICON to bring together professionals in the Public Relations field and students. Many had high hopes to be back in person this year following promises of Covid-19 vaccinations, but the summer surge made this the second year in a row ICON had to be held virtually. Fortunately, the organizers of the event have not let that totally ruin the fun of networking and learning, as they spread out the usually one-week event over three weeks and hosted all the sessions over an app for phones and computers. Although attendance may be lower than in-person events, this accessibility factor allows everyone to still participate in meaningful ways. Every session is recorded and saved for registered users, virtual rooms with tables can be accessed throughout the session days for networking opportunities, and forums with different topics are always available.
In our chapter’s next general meeting, our board will be sharing some of their favorite takeaways from the sessions and conference. The overlying theme of the 2021 ICON Conference focuses on advocacy and diversity, as well as the spread of misinformation. Some favorite sessions we like so far include “PRessing Issues: A Discussion on Advocacy for the Profession”, “ICONversation: Hot-button DEI Issues in PR”, “Building Trust in a Distrustful Age”, and “Is Your Marketing Communications Accessible?”. Join us on Wednesday, October 20, 2021 at 6PM in the RSJ Reading Room to hear about some of these great topics. We are learning so much, and we’re excited to share it!
